Mapped network drive inaccessible

Are you trying to access a mapped network drive on your computer, but it has a red X (see example below)?

Here's what you can do to resolve the situation.

Several solutions are possible.

Solution 1: Reboot the computer

  • If you brought your computer home from the office without shutting it down, the mapped network drives may be unable to reconnect. A reboot will resolve the situation.

Solution 2: Run the map command

  • At the office: If you have already rebooted or only turned on your computer and are still unable to access the mapped network drives, run the map command* found on your desktop. (See example below)

  • Outside the office: If you have already done a reboot or have just turned on your computer and are still unable to access mapped network drives, make sure you are connected to the VPN and then run the map command* found on your desktop. (See example below)
